1/72 Alanger Yakovlev Yak 9-K

Gallery Article by Theodore Fonbonne on Sept 17 2009

Hi, everybody! This is my first article for ARC, I am 19 years old. This is an Alanger model, entirely painted by hand.

The model, which I made 2 years ago, was easy to build, despite needing some filling and panel line scribing. There was also a wheel bay problem which I was unable to fix, as you can see on the pictures. (I wish I had better pictures, but I sold this model for almost $100!) The photo quality unfortunately masks some of the detail work. I'm getting better at taking pictures, so the next submission should be better.

About the construction: I needed to do some scratch building in the cockpit and build a new molded canopy, as the one from the kit was too thick.

I hand painted the entire plane with brushes and aircraft color paints. No airbrushing! (I now have a great airbrush, thanks to the sale of this model and one other, a Polikarpov I-16.) The decals are from the box, but I hand painted the shading, weathering and paint chipping effects. I stole some of my mother's makeup - and her brow brush (don't tell her) to create the exhaust burns. The result is quite effective, I think. Try it yourself! For the mud stains on the landing gear, I used the Tamiya weathering stick and an old brush. I then added the last details: the rear view mirror, the antenna wire, and the 75mm cannon in the nose.

Hope you enjoy it. I'll be sending pix of the Polikarpov I-16 soon.
