This is my Me
109 G-6 as flown by Gerhard Barkhorn of JG 52 on the Eastern Front in the
summer of 1942.
Barkhorn was the second top scoring ace of the Luftwaffe with his 301
victories.
Much has been said about this kit and there isn't much to add: the parts
fit together well with only very little putty needed. The cockpit is
pretty simple but with some scratchbuilt details (wires, pipes and seat
belts made of Letraset tape) it turns out good enough. I've added also the
usual brake lines and some detail to the inside of the radiators and to
the drop tank.

The camouflage
is the standard RLM 74/75/76 with the undercowl and lower wingtips painted
yellow RLM 04. The RLM 74 and 75 are Gunze acrylics while RLM 76 and
04 are enamels by Molak and Humbrol respectively.
Decals are from the kit apart from the upper and fuselage crosses and the
yellow fuselage band which are airbrushed.
I've kept weathering down to a
minimum, considering that the "G" version of the 109 arrived
during 1942 and so this machine shouldn't look too "fatigued".
I've applied a light panel wash with oils and sprayed along the panel
lines a thinned down mix of black, grey and brown, insisting more on the
undersurfaces and the engine area. Some oil leaks, guns / exhausts stains
and a final coat of Humbrol acrylic satin varnish complete the process.
After having taken
the pictures, I had fun rigging two of them to simulate a picture and a movie
frame of the era.
Hope you like it! :-)
Best,
Lorenzo
