Long time ago before
Trumpeter decided to release a "C"-model of the Hun, I had already
planned to build a C-model by converting Monogram's "D". When finally
Cutting Edge offered a resin conversion kit and decals of one of the most
gaudiest Huns ever taking into the air, I wanted to realize my plan.
Subject of CED48128
decals is Colonel George Laven's personal aircraft, serialed 54-2076. Col. Laven
was a veteran ace with more than 1000 combat missions in WW II. In 1954, as the
commander of the 479 TFW at George AFB, California, he picked this brand new jet
from the North American factory. The last 4 numbers of the serial was the
same as the P-38 he flew in 1942 and 1943.
In his personal Hun
Col. Laven logged over 2000 flying hours.
Although a major
conversion, building the model was surprisingly easy and no problems occured to
be mentioned here.
To create the highly
polished finish of Laven's bird, I used simple kitchen aluminium foil, but this
time I've used the shiny side of the foil.

Applying the decals was
this time not as easy as I had expected, because even the external fuel
tanks carried 4 colors around the tips causing me some problems. But it
worked finally.
Looking back at my project I can
say if I should do it again, I would use Trumpeter's C-model of the Hun by using
Monogram's nearly correct intake. This would save me a lot of time.
Enjoy the pictures and let me
know your opinion.
