I’ve always liked the look of
the orange painted drones used by the USAF and USN. The contrast between the
camouflage paint scheme and the day-glo paint is just attractive.

I set out from the
beginning to build this kit as a drone, so there wasn’t ever any doubt as to
how it would end up. I pretty much went box stock except for a few wires and
antennas added to represent the drone conversion, fairing over the gun ports,
opening some vents, repositioned the horizontal stabs and added the smoke oil
line coming from the engine compartment.
The painting
was done using Model Master enamel, and Tamiya acrylic paints. Weathering was
achieved using some ground chalk pastels. Since there are no decals for this
aircraft, they came from my spares box.
What I forgot
to mention was that the Super Sabre sat unfinished for nearly a year, as those
darn seams were really a major pain. I don’t rescribe kits, so I had to make
some choices about how to make it look the part. Hopefully I’ve done it
justice.
