This is my rendition
of the Volvo FL6 Fire Appliance in the colours of a domestic fire tender of the
Royal Air Force Fire Service (now defence Fire Services). The model is part of
the white metal range from BW Models and is 1/76 scale. I found the fit of parts
to be a bit rough in areas although with some effort it can be made very
presentable. I also used decals from the BW Decal Range which are aimed at the
vehicles produced in the BW range. It took me just over three weeks to get it
built, painted and decalled. Now it sits next to the other RAF Fire Appliances I
have made which I hope to display on a small diorama at some point.
Construction of the
kit proved to be troublesome at times with the fit which meant the files had to
keep coming out to file down edges. The windows are supplied as one small part of
clear soft plastic card and again patience proved to be a virtue in trying to
measure and cut out to shape. In the end I resorted to using Humbrol's clearfix
for some of the windows and used the part supplied with the kit for the main
windscreen.
Overall, I would say
that for the fan of both RAF and Army support vehicles, BW is a not too bad
product.
