The Spitfire Mk XVI
was a late war version with a bubble canopy, used successfully to a great extent
as a fighter bomber. Several squadrons flew it, including 302
Squadron. This particular aircraft was flown by Squadron Leader Boleslaw
Kaczmarek stationed at Varrelbusch, Germany, in June through early August
1945. The markings are from Lifelike Decal sheet no. 109.

This is the former Occidental
model of the Spitfire Mk XVI in 1/48th, re-released by Italeri recently. The kit
looks very much like a Spitfire and the fit is good. I had to use very little
filler. There was almost no flash present on the sprues.
I've always just
sent in photos in the past of models just taken against a bland background and
they tend to look just like models, so this time I took the shots with the model
sitting on a WWII Verlinden German aircraft revetment to give it a little spice!
As the Mk XVI's were used as fighter bombers supporting the Allied advance it
isn't too far a stretch to place one in these surroundings...
As an experiment I
am also including a "weathered, aged, 'black & white print' " of
the same model. It was fun playing with it to try to get the old aged, sepiad
look.
