1/72 Italeri Dornier Do-24

--------------------

Here’s my first submission to ARC after years of admiring the fine work presented here. Italieri’s Dornier Do-24 has been issued under the Revell and Testor’s banners, but is the same venerable kit inside. I built it largely as an exercise in weathering, and because I like odd-ball aircraft. It was built mostly OOB, with some scratch-built exterior detail such as tie-downs, antennas and windshield wipers. Polly-Scale acrylics were used along with kit decals. The weathering was done with several washes, then powdered pastels. Flying boats were abused by combat, harsh treatment and seawater, so they tended to look pretty weather-beaten, and this was the finish I was trying to replicate. The trick is knowing when to stop.

I actually built this some time ago but I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, so it went into the “in-progress” pile for a time. I recently pulled it back out and started working on the finish some more until I was happier with it, but sooner or later I had to say “enough” and consider it finished. There’s black, several shades of gray, faded green, rust, silver paint dry-brushed on all the leading edges, chipped paint (various pencil leads) all over the bottom, exhaust stains, paint streaks on the sides and wing, etc., etc. Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

P.S. to Steve: Hope the GT-6 is progressing. Beware Lucas, Prince of Darkness!
